TRUE LIONS - “THE FEMPIRE STRIKES BACK”

True Lions is a giant party of a band, led by the mega-talented Alison Hawkins, and featuring many other mega-talented musicians including: Elizabeth Kosko, Teri Quinn, Claire Adams, Adee Rocket Dancy, Aryana Nemati, KuJo, Iona DeWalt, and Miki P.

The Kansas City band, described as a flosspunk alt-pop supergroup, delivers a playful, refreshing, and subversive album with The Fempire Strikes Back. The album features a wide variety of instruments and sounds, making it a multi-dimensional treat with each song being equally as creative and robust as the last. There’s a deep sense of community on the album, and the genre-bending stylings of the band only add to the diversity and cheerfulness of their music.

The whole album is a giant anti-patriarchal roar against the system, calling out corrupt systems and capitalist BS with playful keytar, catchy melodies, and yes, even a badass saxophone solo. The album as a whole is like a harmonious scream in response to 2020 and the powers that be, a safe space to yell into the void while shaking a tambourine. If you’ve been looking for something in between the parade-like music of Arcade Fire and the angsty shouts of Bikini Kill, you’ve come to the right place.

My favorite tracks: Sirens, Escape Room, Ode to Keytar
