Superflaw - "Fictitious"

Superflaw - Fictitous

Superflaw 1.JPG

There’s a thick layer of grit on top of Superflaw’s debut LP Fictitious. That could be to protect the raw emotion laid bare across its eight tracks. A fuzzy hum over the howling, nervy vocals. Superflaw’s brand of noisy rock harkens to the Midwest emo of yesteryear; brutal lyrics and shattering instrumentation. Your heart aches with every buzzing guitar. Crystal clear yet grimy. “Drink and smoke every time we hangout/Maybe we’ll makeout sometime” is cooed sourly over of the warm crunch of “Well Understood.” Maybe it invokes memories of nights on a certain venue patio. Or maybe I’m just waxing nostalgic.

There’s plenty of hopeless romanticism, but also a political angst seething throughout: “What you hate about yourself is what you hate about your country” on “Tragically Hip” and “We were blue bait in a red state” on “Total Gold.” Charged and as abrasive as the crashing drums, Superflaw holds nothing back. It all builds to the cathartic release on “Mama Said,” with its gnashing teeth and fiery chords. This is the energy needed for dark days.
