Through its tender punk sensibilities, LK Ultra’s most recently released single “I’m Doing This Because I Love You” brings comfort to the thought of choosing yourself. Repetitive rhythm mirrors the repeated effort put into relationships that don’t return that same deserved repetition. Starting out slow, the track lulls you into a false sense of security, much like the one you thought would always be there when you woke up. Slightly deadpan, although definitely not lacking in emotion, Inez Robinson’s vocals call out “You make it so hard / You’re so close but your heart is so far.” Strong guitar sways back and forth debating whether to keep holding their hand if they aren’t holding yours back. The song perfectly expresses the process of debating whether or not to let go. Emotionally supporting backing vocals from fellow Lawrence band, Oxford Remedy, let you know friends are always there — if and when you need them. Whenever I think of LK Ultra I think of strength, both in their music and as an entity. “I’m Doing This Because I Love You” delivers the notion that there is strength in letting go and loving yourself. Now open, you’ll find those who will want to hold on too.
